FUTEBOL THE BRAZILIAN WAY OF LIFE                               www.ofutebol.com

Hi futebolista,

Germany - here we come. Brazil rounded off their qualifying campaign in style, beating Venezuela 3-0 to finish top of the group ahead of Argentina. And after a year without a goal for his country, Ronaldo's name was back on the scoresheet - let's hope it's an indication of what's to come next summer.

Back in the Brasileiro controversy was surrounding officials once again. In a tumultuous encounter between Santos and Corinthians on Thursday, referee Cleber Wellington Abade awarded a dubious late penalty, which Carlos Alberto converted to give Corinthians a 3-2 lead.

Enraged by his decision, the Santos supporters invaded the pitch and after the official was almost assaulted by an irate fan, he brought a halt to the contest declaring Corinthians the winners. The result all but ends the Santos title challenge.

Corinthians return to action on Sunday with archrivals Palmeiras the opposition. Be prepared - this fixture is renowned for its controversy. When the two clubs clashed in the final of the 1999 Copa do Brasil, the match was abandoned after an almighty brawl took place involving players, coaches and officials. Even a ball-boy was punched in the melee.

The Round 32 game will have added importance. Corinthians have won their last five league matches and are in danger of running away with the title. Palmeiras are one of the only teams that can stop them but it is imperative that Emerson Leao's team pick up a win on Sunday.

These are the current standings;

1 - Corinthians 62
2 - Goias 56
3 - Internacional 53
4 - Palmeiras 52
5 - Parana 51
6 - Fluminense 51
7 - Santos 48

The relegation battle has also been getting interesting this week. Paysandu sacked coach Gilson Kleina and replaced him with 1970 World Cup legend Carlos Alberto Torres, who immediately won his first game in charge.

And Vasco's controversial president Eurico Miranda has introduced a new set of laws for his players to adhere to, as the Rio outfit look to avoid relegation. It goes without saying that the rules are not applicable to Romario.

Finally, seven Brazilians have been The nominated for the 2005 FIFA World Player of the Year award. Barcelona's Ronaldinho is attempting to retain his crown but he faces competition from compatriots Cafu, Roberto Carlos, Kaka, Robinho, Ronaldo and Adriano.

Enjoy the weekend, amigos.
