Brazil has hundreds of professional football clubs. It is impossible to say precisely how many there are, however, since they are endlessly being founeded and shut down. The best that the Brazilian Football Confederation can say is that in 2000 it registered forty-eight new professional teams - almost one a week. Sportspaper Lance! lists 794 in its encyclopedia, and the magazine Placar claims that 302 are operational. However, according to Marco Aurelio Klein's almanac Futebol Brasileiro, the twenty-seven professional state leagues (accounting for fifty-two divisions) contain 531 clubs. The teams listed on the left are the teams in the Serie A of the Brazilian championship together with Palmeiras and Botafogo. To find more detailed backgrounds about the main states, Rio de Janeiro, Sáo Paulo, Rio Grande da Sul and Mias Gerais, click on the names on the top left.
