THE RUNNING MAN
Toninho Cerezzo remains one of the most popular players to have donned the Alvinegra jersey. He was an impeccably consistent player and success appeared unable to evade his grasp. After joining Galo in 1973, he spent a year with Nacional-AM before returning to Minas Gerais ready for combat. Soon after, his bustling displays at the heart of the midfield soon won him an army of fans.
His emergence into the Atlético side coincided with the club asserting itself as one of the finest in South American football. For ten successful years, Toninho was an indispensable figure at the heart of Galo’s midfield. His talent was evident but what stood Toninho Cerezzo out from the crowd was his peerless work-rate. The mustached number 5 had seemingly limitless energy levels, and this proved paramount to the Mineiro club’s success. What it did was enable the glitzy forwards, to express themselves offensively, without being burdened with having to track back. The ever-willing Toninho’s coverage of the ground, compensated for his colleagues lack of it. It proved a perfect combination.
Toninho was often tagged as the ‘complete footballer’ and this was perfectly applicable. Perhaps what cemented his standing as one of the finest ever, Brazilian midfielders was the effect he had on others around him. Toninho Cerezzo was an incessant inspiration, constantly geeing up the younger or less confident players. He was a dream for his coaches and team-mates alike. Before leaving to embark upon another successful adventure with Falcão in Rome, Toninho aided Atlético Mineiro to seven Mineiro State Titles, and twice elevated the club to the Brazilian Championship final. Atlético tasted defeat both occasions but in each year, their outstanding midfield icon, deservedly won the Brazilian Bola de Ouro (awarded to the best player of the Brazilian Championship).
