  • MASTERY FROM THE MIDFIELD
Paulo Isidoro was a midfielder whose creative midfield play was accompanied by the tenaciousness, akin with a British lower league footballer. He began his career with Atlético but it took a stint on loan with Nacional-AM to convince Galo’s coaching team of his worth. Upon his return to Minas Gerais, Paulo Isidoro was thrust into the thick of things and it wasn’t long before the workmanlike midfielder was exacting his influence on the outcome of the Campeonato Mineiro. In 1976, Galo interrupted Cruzeiro’s four year winning sequence to land the State Title. In that same year, the player nicknamed Tiziu (a small, black bird), was named in the Brazilian Championship team of the year – he would go on to be included in the prestigious ‘Team of the Championship’ on a further two occasions. Paulo Isidoro won two more State Titles with Atlético Mineiro, (1978 & 1979) before he departed the club in an exchange deal which marked the arrival at the Olympic Village of Éder.

A year after joining the Rio Grande de Sul club, Paulo Isidoro went one step further than he had done in 1977, when he was on the losing side in the Brazilian Championship final. Grêmio defeated their more illustrious opponents, São Paulo, 1-0 in the final. Paulo Isidoro was named Brazilian player of the Year. The Galo supporters could hardly lament over the deal which saw the arrival of Éder but how they must have wished, that Paulo Isidoro didn’t have to be the subject of sacrifice in order for the club to attain his services. Had Paulo Isidoro stayed with Atlético to play alongside Éder and co, who knows what might have been?
