Mario de Castro

POSITION: Forward
FULL NAME: Mário de Castro
DATE OF BIRTH: 30-06-1905
PLACE OF BIRTH: Formiga (Minas Gerais)

CAREER DETAILS:
  • Atlético Mineiro: 1925-31

  • PERSONAL HONOURS:
  • 3 Times Mineiro State Championship Top Scorer (1926, 1927 & 1929)

  • ATLÉTICO’S FIRST TERRACE IDOL
América had been dominating Minerio football during the 1920’s until the emergence of Mário de Castro. Almost instantly, the pendulum swung in the Atlético’s favour and the club won their second Mineiro State Title in 1926, thus interrupting América’s sequence of ten consecutive State Titles. Mário de Castro had already given an early indication of his potential, netting a hat-trick on his debut for Atlético the year previous. In each of the five years that followed his debut, he was Atlético Mineiro’s top goal scorer. Mário de Castro developed a reputation not only for scoring goals but for scoring crucial ones. This endeared him to the Galo fans who duly adopted him as the first true God of the terraces. He may not have been one of the most spectacular players to play for Atlético Mineiro but he was one of the most productive. Only the immortalised duo of Reinaldo and Dario, managed to score more than the 203 goals Mário de Castro netted for the Mineiro giants.
